Toners:
What is the Technology Behind the
"Dry Ink" Laser Toner ?
When deciding what
type of printer to buy, it's helpful to know the difference between
inkjet ink and powdery toners, and what makes laser toner work like
ink. If you have particular printing needs, it's better to have a
laser toner type printer. Are businesses the only users of toners?
The laser printer
was introduced by Hewlett-Packard in 1984, based on technology developed
by Canon. It worked in a similar way to a photocopier, the difference
being the light source. As you've probably observed, a photocopier
uses a bright light to scan a page, while with a laser printer the
light source is, not surprisingly, a laser. After that the process
is much the same, with the light creating an electrostatic image of
the page onto a charged photoreceptor drum, which in turn attracts
laser toner in the shape of the electrostatic charge. Toners are given
a positive electric charge, and so are attracted to the drum. A stronger
negative charge is then given to the paper, which then picks up the
toner. A fuser then heats up the paper, melting (fusing) the toner
onto the paper, and you have a finished product.
